Paddling on the Cedar River

Two days ago Harriet and I paddled down the Cedar River between Pelon Road and the Pashley Falls. There were places where the water was only about 3 inches deep, but our Hornbeck Black Jacks floated right over the sand bars. It is a beautiful stretch of about 2.5 miles with wildflowers and towering trees lininng the banks. The unique feature of this paddle is that there are scores of golf balls scattered along the sandy bottom, which have been washed downstream from the Cedar River Golf Course about a mile upstream. It impressed me that these balls, which do not float, could be found all the way down to the shallows above the falls. They illustrate the power of floodwater to move objects even as small and dense as golf balls for miles downstream! 

Yesterday we paddled on Lake Abanakee on a crystal-clear morning, and the water was smooth as glass. We passed at least five paddlers who were in Hornbeck Black Jacks like ours!

Neowise comet view

I was able to locate and photograph the Neowise Comet that is re-approaching the Earth after passing within 3 million miles of us on its way toward the sun- a near miss! It is again visible after circling around the sun and passing us by on its way out of the solar system. It has never been seen before this visit and may not be back for thousand of years!

New LEAG article

I have been writing articles about the annual outings of the League of Extraordinary Adirondack Gentlemen for ten years, and for the first time I am publishing the uncut story of our most recent outing which was to Lake Lila in Hamilton County last September. I hope readers will give me feedback so I can decide whether to publish an anthology of the illustrated stories through Indian Lake Press. Today was my second visit to the New York State Capital District chapter of the Military Officers' Association of America at the Edison Club in Rexford, where I gave a PowerPoint talk on how the B-29 heavy bomber ended World War II in the Pacific at least a year earlier than if if had never existed. The audience of veterans and their spouses were very attentive and I appreciated their stories. Thanks to Skip Bebernitz for giving me this opportunity to trade stories and history with some great people!!

Enjoying the autumn Adirondack scenery with Harriet

Harriet and I enjoyed the beautiful Adirondack weather last weekend, climbing Watch Hill between the western shore of Indian Lake and the slopes of Snowy Mountain, then hiking along the Cedar River to Pashley Falls.
